March 25th, 2010

MAIT-IMRB’s recent Quarterly Industry Performance Review estimates that the total PC sales (desktops, notebooks and netbooks) for Q3 FY2009-10 grew 42 percent over the same period last fiscal, to reach a total figure of 2 million units.

According to the study, the sales of desktops stood at 1.35 million units, netbooks and notebooks taken together recorded a consumption of 0.66 million units, growing 27 per cent and 90 per cent respectively on a year-on-year basis. The assembled desktops, which include the smaller lesser known regional brands and unbranded systems, accounted for 35 per cent of the desktop sales in Q3 2009-10, while the proportion of the branded desktops was 65 percent. MNC brands accounted for 52 percent of the market, while the Indian brands accounted for the remaining 13 percent.

The report observes that with improving business sentiment and to meet the demands of growing business, the enterprise segment invested in enhancement of their existing network capabilities and modernization of their IT infrastructure leading to a 30 percent growth in the server deployment in Q3 2009-10 on a year-on-year basis. It estimates that over 27,000 units of servers were consumed in the third-quarter of 2009-10.

Findings also indicate that the Printers market bounced back in Q3. Led by high sales in the enterprise segment, consumption of laser printers witnessed an impressive growth of 70 percent. Consumption of Dot Matrix printers (DMP), on the back of robust institutional sales, grew by 13 percent in Q3 compared to the same period last year, observes the report.

It also estimates that Inkjet printer sales grew 17 percent in the Q3 over that of the last year. While households and small businesses have been the traditional drivers of consumption of inkjet printers, the retail segment also emerged as a significant consumer of the Inkjet printers.

The report observes that improved consumption in enterprises and households alike, saw the UPS market grow by 28 per cent on an annual basis in the Q3, registering 0.56 million units in sales.
