Lexmark releases multifunction laser printer in x264dn

April 30th, 2010

Lexmark released the x264dn, a multifunction laser printer that offers printing at 30 pages per minute, according to a recent report by Maximum PC.

The publication’s main criticism of the x264dn is that, even though it is called a multifunction printer, the scanning software that it comes with is “nearly useless.”

Printer expert Loyd Case says that although he had to go online for a printer driver that is compatible with Windows 7, the printer installation disc that comes with it offers support for an array of operating systems.

“With the exception of 64-bit Windows 7 drivers, which we had to find and download from Lexmark’s website, the printer’s installation disc provides robust operating-system support, including most other flavors of Windows, various versions of Linux, MacOS, Solaris, and more,” wrote Case.

The x264dn is priced at $400, but was seen online selling for $300, says Maximum PC.

The high-capacity printing cartridges that are made for the model allow 9,000 pages to be printed and cost about $234, which amounts to 2.6 cents per page.

Lexmark recently made gains in the first quarter of 2010, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The printer maker’s profits jumped 61 percent, with company leaders citing a stronger product line and a lower cost structure, the report says.
