At a glance, common fonts ranked by ink usage

Changing the fonts used in your printer can save you cash.

Printouts use different volumes of ink depending on the font. In a test by a Dutch company, Printer.com, Century Gothic and Times New Roman used the least ink.

Businesses and universities could save tens of thousands of dollars per year by changing their defaults to these fonts. Home users could save about $20, or the price of one cartridge.

Printer.com, a printer-comparison site, tested several common fonts and ranked them in the following order, from those that use the least ink to those that use the most:

1. Century Gothic

2. Times New Roman

3. Calibri

4. Verdana

5. Arial

6. MSSans Serif

7. Trebuchet MS

8. Tahoma

9. Franklin Gothic Medium
